7 Things You Should Know
Before You Hire an SEO Consultant.
1. What Are Your Customers Searching For on Google?
…without this step, you may be missing a large amount of your traffic…
…some of which can likely be captured by your business relatively easily.
SEO project after SEO project, I see businesses missing quality revenue opportunities because…
…well, because no one had yet done a thorough job researching their target market online.
We’re talking about missing business opportunities that require a small one-time cost, yet provide a significant revenue benefit month after month…year after year…
…if only someone had taken the time to…do their homework to completion.
Is your company missing out on easy to reach customers due to something simple and easy to work on?
Detailed planning and Keyword Research should be done at the beginning of any SEO project.
Together, should you hire me to help you out, your company and I, will look at the data and have a back and forth discussion to explore your natural search engine opportunities…
Without this process, it can be like going on a journey to unfamiliar territory without maps or GPS and expecting to do well…
If you’d like me to take a look at it for free before we get started…
2. Is SEO Likely to Be Profitable for Your Company?
Not all businesses will benefit from SEO…
…or, more precisely, there are a wide range of SEO opportunities for different companies…
…Ranking your website well in Google’s organic search results can provide from $0 to millions in revenue…
So, before I ask for any sort of payment from your company, I will want to convince myself and you that there are significantly profitable SEO opportunities available.
First of all, SEO does best in markets where potential customers are already aware of your products and/or services…
…and therefore are searching for your business without knowing your business existed moments before.
If you are entering a new market for a product or service that doesn’t really exist already, then SEO may not be for your business…
…perhaps proper social media marketing or digital ads or classic direct sales would work best for you…
If you provide a local home service like plumbers, electricians, water damage, mold remediation, etc…then SEO can be a HUGE boon to your bottom line.
…and you will want to make sure you check out item (6) on this list
When you ask me to give you my SEO analysis and recommendations I will look for competitors that are making money with SEO.
Therefore, we will have a significant clue to what kind of traffic is possible for your business.
This is an imperfect situation because it doesn’t necessarily mean your target market isn’t searching for you if few or no businesses have put together a high level & thorough SEO project.

3. What’s Google’s Impression of Your Business Now?
So, let’s move forward assuming that there’s enough of a market for your business to justify the costs of doing search engine optimization properly…
Next, you should try to figure out what Google thinks of you now…
To put it simply, in order to get to optimum SEO situation, you will need to dig into where you are on the Search playing field.
If you have a brand new site…just registered domain/setup some public pages/done no SEO…
…then it is highly unlikely that Google thinks much of you and your SEO timeline may be long in order to give Google the opportunity to…trust your business digitally
Most businesses that I talk to have at least somewhat of a…reputation for a lack of a better word…online with Google over at least a year…
Therefore, I can show them some data and often make conclusions that will help guide any new/old SEO project going forward.
Some of the data points I will look at and potentially show you (if significantly relevant to your business objectives):
1) Estimated monthly search volumes
2) Google search engine results pages (SERPs) rankings
3) Google Maps rankings — very different metrics vs (2) above
4) SEO “Authority”
5) SEO “Trust”
6) SEO Relevance
7) Competitors’ data
8) …and potentially more depending on what I find
This data will allow me to further demonstrate real, monetary value for the people searching online for your products and/or services…
…allowing you and I to easier see a profitable SEO project plan.

4. What is Your Current Online Traffic Situation?
If you’re currently getting traffic from social media, ads, email marketing, TV ads, or other channels, then we should definitely talk about it!
…I enjoy hearing about how businesses are marketed…
…and talking about your broad marketing plans does help me to provide a better SEO service for your company.
Furthermore, there may be places where you are getting traffic to your website that you weren’t aware of…
…some data sets are…polluted…and need to be processed in order to understand the meaning.
While traffic from non-SEO sources isn’t likely to rank you all by itself, it definitely helps with SEO…
…and can usually be easily tweaked to help even more.
Doing a radio ad? A few words different and you may be able to get a much bigger SEO boost…
Are you investing in Social Media Marketing (SMM)? Both SEO and SMM together can have implications for the other…

5. What’s Google’s Impression of the SEO Competition?
A&B do often have some correlation, but they can also be quite divergent in numerical trends.
Therefore, I must look at your competition purely from the angle of “SEO Competition”
There are several metrics I use to estimate this competition level…
Are you facing up against a bunch of scrubs or some real pro’s?
…sometimes you have a bunch of scrubs and few real pro’s mixed in there…
…sometimes the whole first page has extremely powerful (from an SEO standpoint) competitors…
…but, even then, there are usually SEO opportunities to be found…
Because you don’t have to rank #1 for everything to “win” …
Win = grow your business profitably with SEO
You need to rank well enough for some searches to drive pre-sold traffic that is your target market to your website day after day…month after month…year after year.
In other words, if you’re in a very competitive market, there are usually some specific low competition, but high value search phrases that you can reasonably rank your website for…

6. Google Maps SEO — the VIP Line for Local Businesses
If you see Google Maps listings as the first non-paid listing in Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) for searches you want to rank for…
…then you’re looking at the Maps VIP line…
Basically, ranking “#1” in the non-maps Organic is like ranking #5-#10 because you have to page down once or even sometimes twice to see this “#1” result…
But, sitting on top of that are the colorful, interactive, 3 pack of Google Maps listings…
…that Google makes more money by sending their visitors to vs sending them off to a different website!
For the last few years I have committed a lot of energy and resources to studying how to rank well in Google Maps…
…and what I’ve found is pretty amazing…
Not only is the vast majority of local business traffic seeing the Maps listings first…
…but doing Maps SEO is a big blind spot for a lot of people out there doing SEO for clients.
They are still stuck in ranking in Google Maps for 2015…
…old ideas die hard…even in SEO.
It still kinda works…but they no longer even know what game they are really playing anymore!
In other words, the metrics they are using to judge a Local SEO project’s success are…not even remotely appropriately descriptive…
In other other words, they have no idea where they are or where they really need to go…
…and therefore, have a very poor Maps SEO plan…
If you’re a local business, you definitely want to talk to me about what this means for your business online…

7. Overall SEO Planning & Strategy
…there’s essentially a bunch of random techniques that may or may not be good…
…and may or may not be relevant to your situation and the thresholds that your specific online business situation presents to you.
There’s no one plan that works like gang busters for all businesses all the time…
An SEO strategy specific to your market and your specific business situation must be built!
It doesn’t take much experience or thought to grab a list of actions from some guy on the internet claiming that “this will rank you #1 on Google!”…
While I’m sure that has worked for a small amount of people, the reality for most businesses is much more complex…
Your businesses’ SEO opportunities are highly contextual to your situation, business objectives, etc…
Also, without lots of different SEO project experiences, it is much more difficult to tell the difference between what’s important and what’s minutia for SEO.
Therefore, if the SEO plan & strategy seems…like not a real goal oriented plan of action…then that consultant or company probably doesn’t have a lot of experience…or at least hasn’t learned very much from that experience.
