Backlinks are one of the most important factors determining your site’s ranking. The higher your link strength, the more likely Google believes your site to have authority over a topic. There are many factors that determine link strength such as keyword density, hyperlink variety, and Pagerank.
It is important to know how many incoming links your website has. This can be seen on the Google Analytics home page. You can also view your site statistics at any time by clicking on the link building icon located in the footer at the bottom of the screen.
You can also get a penalty by Google if you are not careful with your links. For example, Google’s Penguin Algorithm can hit your website hard! One way you do this is by using anchor text that is spam. Anchor text is the words you see in the anchor text that you see when doing a search engine result page scan. Anchor text usually describes a particular product or service that is being offered. If your links are filled with keywords that are often used to search engines, Google may mark these as spam by using a special algorithm to determine ranking. Keyword stuffing is a sure-fire way to get yourself punished.
There are some ways around Google’s keyword stuffing filter such as using words that are rare enough not to show up in a Google search. Some SEO experts consider this a clever trick but many savvy marketers are not comfortable with this strategy. For example, using “bio” as your keyword in a guest posting might seem harmless. However, if you are linking to a blog that promotes “bio” as a cure for cancer, Google might not think so because bio is a keyword that is rarely used as a keyword in the search engine results pages.
A second method is to have a bunch of low-quality links from private blog networks. Blogs are great but they are not the best source for backlinks. Many blogs act like spam websites with little to no informational value. If you spam a blog network, there is a good chance Google will rate you as a spammer and deactivate your site.
The third way is to have as many backlinks as you can through offsite channels such as the article submission, social bookmarking, forums, video submission and other types of submitters. This doesn’t mean you should submit your articles to every article directory on the internet but if you have the time, why not try submitting five or ten a week. Article marketing can give you lots of backlinks quickly and it can be a great source of SEO link juice. Just make sure you don’t spam the submission sites.
The fourth strategy is to build up links from high PageRank or Domain Authority anchor text links. This may sound counterintuitive to the search engines but you must submit your anchor text links to directories, blog directories and newsgroups. Don’t just submit them to the most popular article directories. Because the big boys keep a close eye on these directories, they may remove your links soon after they find out that you are trying to game the system.
