Keyword Research

What is Keyword Research?

Keyword research is the procedure of finding specific words and phrases (aka “keywords“) that people generally use in search engines, such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN. You can find these words and phrases by looking through the pages of Google and other search engine results. Put simply: keywords are like a compass for your SEO efforts: they tell you exactly where to go and if you re making any progress… But what if you’re making no progress? Don’t panic – this is actually common!

Finding good keywords you want to rank for is fundamental to any SEO project.

The reason you aren’t seeing the kind of traffic you’d hoped for is because you have used the wrong keywords! Keyword research tools will tell you whether the terms you’re using to target your site are ones that get the highest searches on the engines – but they’ll give you little else. So how do you know whether keywords are doing you any good? The best way is to use them yourself. However, you first need to understand how the search engines work:

Understanding Keywords

The first step in understanding keyword research tools is to learn a bit about how the search engines work themselves. Search engines show web pages to users based on certain keywords. Web pages are returned based on keywords. They look at the keywords a page is optimized for and determine how it should rank. These factors include the number of times the keyword appears in the title of a page, in the Meta tags, and throughout the code of the page. This helps improve your page’s SEO – but it’s only part of the equation.

The actual algorithms that search engines use to rank pages for SEO can be hard to understand. But, by knowing a little bit about what’s going on, you can get a better idea of how they decide which pages to list and rank. Keyword research tools can provide you with an idea of the basic algorithms. Knowing these basic SEO factors can help improve your site’s ranking.

There are a number of different factors, or facets, of search engine optimization. Some of these facets are technical and a bit confusing. For example, many website owners make the mistake of thinking that backlinks are all they need to increase their rankings. But, backlinks are not the only things that are used in SEO. Some SEO consultants also focus on content, for two very important reasons: one, content helps the search engines understand the theme or business the website owner is trying to convey. And, two, content helps create the “buzz” that is necessary to increase website traffic.

Keywords in Link Building

While backlinks and content are key SEO factors, another aspect of SEO is called “site competitiveness.” This is closely related to search engine optimization, but is different when it comes to ranking. Basically, site competitiveness is measured by the amount of traffic that a website receives. Site competitiveness can be influenced by many factors, including link building strategies, keywords, and competitors.

Other SEO factors that can affect a website’s ranking include the target audience and the purpose of the website. Many companies make the mistake of focusing solely on search results and ignoring other aspects of digital marketing. Companies that offer digital marketing services should always take into consideration the overall marketing strategy as well as the intent of the website.

Keyword research, site competitiveness, search engine optimization, and SEO practices all have an effect on the ranking of a website. Understanding these four concepts can help any company optimize its website and increase its online visibility. The goal of a website is to receive organic traffic, which is enhanced by the use of the various SEO factors.
